Mahshid Esfandiari

PhD, RCC Therapist, EFAP

Mahshid has been a member of the Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP) Team since March 1999. She has extensive experience on the areas of trauma, sexual abuse, incest, stress and depression. She has worked with people from a large variety of culture. She has a great deal of respect and a deep understanding for people who have faced such challenges.

Education & Training

Mahshid holds both a PhD and MSc in psychology and has completed three years of extensive training in Gestalt Therapy. She is a registered clinical counselor and has also been trained as an EMDR Therapist for levels 1 and 2, also trained as CBT Therapist.  Mahshid has been a therapist since 1981. She has worked in the areas of trauma for over 30 years and 15 years of experience in Employee and Family Assistance work.

Areas of Expertise

Mahshid works with individuals, families and couples. She works with adults and teens, male and female. Her work is mainly related to trauma, stress, depression and work related issues.


Mahshid’s philosophy in her work is that people have a lot of inner strengths and in general are survivors of life’s circumstances. Therapy supports and directs them in recognizing that they are survivors and not victims. Therapy also helps them realize their strengths in order to apply them to present problems.

Work History

Presently EFAP Therapist with Coastal Health, Mahshid has worked as a Therapeutic Coordinator and supervisor with the Vancouver Association for the Survivors of Torture (VAST) for 14 years. Here, she did crises counseling, coordinated the volunteer Therapist team, and supervised practicum students from SFU and UBC. Mahshid also has her own private practice.

Mahshid has a close relationship with her daughter and mother. They spend a lot of quality time together, going for walks, and reading. A Multipoo puppy has also recently joined the family and adds a sense of great joy. Mahshid enjoys a large variety of music, she loves gardening, and when time allows her, she likes to attend the gym.
